Realistic Wood

Create a new 400x400 pixels document with a black background.

Press D to reset colors (foreground color black & background color white).

Apply Fibers (Filter > Render > Fibers); Variance: 16.0 & Strength: 4.0. Press Randomize until you get something similar to the picture on the left.

Here comes the hard part. Use the Liquify Filter(Filter > Liquify). Use the Forward Wrap Tool (W) with the following settings:

Brush Size: 85
Brush Density: 50
Brush Pressure: 100

You should move the brush up and down in a zig-zag pattern as shown in the picture below. You may need to do this more than once to get a better effect; also try and loop once in a while to simulate wood knots. Press the Ok button when you think you are done.

Don't worry if you don't get it the first time, you'll get it right with some practice.

We are almost finished now. Create a new layer and fill it with brown color, in my case I used #573E16.

Set the Blending Mode of the new layer to Multiply

You are done now. Hope you have enjoyed it.
