Sand

Create a new document by pressing Ctrl+N and set the dimensions according to your needs, in my case I used a small 150 x 150 pixel canvas just to show you.

Set the Foreground color to #AA9266 and the Background color to #583F17. (this are the colors I chose, but of course you can use others).

With this colors set, apply the Clouds Filter (Filter > Render > Clouds).

Now apply Noise (Noise > Add Noise) using the following values:

Amount: 10% (This value will set the size of the grain).
Distribution: Uniform

Set it to monochromatic.

Create a New Layer (Shift+Ctrl+N) and call it Layer2. Reset your colors to the default settings (D), and use the Clouds Filter (Filter -> Render -> Clouds).

Next, use the Radial Blur feature (Filter -> Blur -> Radial Blur). Use the following settings: Zoom, 40, and Best.

Next, do Bas Relief (Filter -> Sketch -> Bas Relief). Use the following settings:

Detail: 7
Smoothness: 15
Light: Top

The result should look similar to the picture on the left.

Use the Chrome tool (Filter -> Sketch -> Chrome). Use the following settings:

Detail: 0
Smoothness: 10

Set Layer2 to Overlay, and lower the oppacity until you get something similar to the picture on the left (about 25%).

Merge (Shift+Ctrl+E) all visible layers.

Select Edit > Transform > Perspective and drag one of the lower corner handles away form the image to get some perspective on the sand.

This is the result I got, good luck!

Used this for a drawing of mine. I liked how it came out, even though I believe I did something wrong, it works and I really like how easy it is. Thanks.

I've already opened Photoshop and I'll start by opening a texture to use for displacement. So I'll click File, open, and select my texture. This is a picture I took of sand. You can use anything you want to displace text, but keep in mind that a picture with a lot of random objects won't displace properly.

Thanks

I couldn't do filter -> sketch -> bas relief. could it be i'm using adobe CS4?

Chris on Sat, 13 Feb 2010 21:48:00

Does this actually work on CS3? Every time I try to render clouds with the colors the tutorial prescribes, they always end up black and white.
